Modeling Reality with Virtual Worlds

Virtual worlds are places where people can go into virtually to experience many things, sometime things that cannot be experienced in reality. There are many advantages of virtual reality along with some disadvantages. Some advantages would be virtual prototypes such as cars, training programs for military, medical training, therapy and many more. According to an article, "The virtual world moves into the classroom", students are able to learn science related topics such as volcanoes and history topics from significant American history such as the civil war. Marsha Maxwell, the head of educational technology for Atlanta International School stated that virtual reality help students learn with perspective which can improve their learning experience. This can also foster creativity in students because they are allowed to vividly experience what they are learning rather than reading plain text. In addition to this, virtual reality can also help treat many medical problems such as anxiety, autism and much more. According to an article,"iReport: 'Naughty Auties' battle autism with virtual interaction", virtual reality can potentially be beneficial for people with autism, communication problems, social problems and emotional problems. There is a game called, "second life", where you can set up virtual environments or situations where people might come across in their daily lives. By doing this, they can practice in this simulated environment to help them improve their condition. On the other hand, a disadvantage would be the difficulty to create a virtual environment that captures all the aspects of the real world. Developers face many problems such as , lag time, lack of acuity and overlooking the basic laws of physics. I personally think the future of virtual world has potential to become something beyond our expectations and there are a lot of room for improvements. Technologies are constantly advancing everyday and I think in the future virtual reality can potentially be what future generations would use to learn whether in school, military, hospital and much more. This is because virtual reality makes learning more interesting and allows you to learn with perspective along with the virtual experience.

  1. Hi Fullwin,
I think future generations using virtual reality for school is an interesting idea. Virtual reality has the potential to enhance a student's learning experience. However, I think it would be best if it's used as a supplement to regular in-person classes. Otherwise, classes done using virtual reality alone would severely limit the amount of human interaction students have.
